Green Ops in Practice: Tools, Data and Culture for a Sustainable Cloud

Julien Nioche, Green Software Advocate and Director at Digital Pebble.

Green Tech South West presents an online event where we’ll hear from Julien Nioche, Green Software Advocate and Director at Digital Pebble.

Green Ops in Practice: Tools, Data, and Culture for Sustainable Cloud

Cloud computing is a major energy consumer, yet most organisations still lack the visibility and tools needed to accurately quantify—let alone reduce—their environmental impact. This talk dives into the real-world challenges of tackling cloud emissions, starting with the incomplete, often inaccurate, and rarely actionable data provided by the cloud providers.

We’ll explore the current landscape of commercial solutions, share how we partnered with one based in our region to help a leading Bristol-based organisation cut their cloud emissions, and discuss how these tools compare in practice.

Along the way, we’ll introduce key concepts, offer practical tips, and dig into some of the toughest hurdles—from navigating imperfect data to convincing internal stakeholders, all grounded in my own experience as a developer. We’ll also touch on a topic that everybody is expecting: how to estimate the carbon impact of AI workloads and Software-as-a-Service (SaaS).

Finally, we’ll explore the growing ecosystem of open source tools, and how they can empower individuals across an organisation to take initiative, influence decision-making, and foster a culture of sustainability.
